Danilo Plessow aka MCDE

Danilo Plessow moves between roles with ease: DJ, producer, label founder, collaborator. Known to many through his Motor City Drum Ensemble alias, he has built a practice rooted in deep musical knowledge and a broad listening culture. His DJ sets reflect that openness. House and techno may form a base, but soul, jazz, disco, and more experimental textures regularly surface.

Plessow’s work has never remained fixed within one genre. Through projects such as Inverse Cinematics and Vermont, he explored more introspective and melodic terrain. With his Space Grapes label, he shifted toward fully analogue productions inspired by the warmth and tactility of 1970s and 80s recordings, working closely with live musicians to foreground groove and arrangement. His recent project, Rude Futures, marks a return to electronic forms with a darker tonal palette. The music feels leaner, sometimes more angular, yet still attentive to rhythm as a shared pulse.

At Jazz Middelheim, Plessow represents a strand of contemporary club culture that listens closely to the history of jazz, soul, and funk. His approach to DJing shares a principle with improvisation: shaping atmosphere in real time, building continuity across different eras, and allowing rhythm to carry the conversation.
