Cymande
- Sunday Birdland
Cymande was formed in early 1970s South London by musicians of Caribbean heritage who had grown up in the UK. Led by Patrick Patterson and Steve Scipio, the group developed a sound that blended funk, jazz, soul, and Caribbean rhythms into something spacious and deliberate. Their grooves were unhurried yet precise, often built around deep bass lines, layered percussion, and reflective vocals. While they found early recognition in the United States, including performances at the Apollo Theatre, their position in Britain remained uncertain. The music industry of the time offered little sustained support, and by the mid-1970s, the band stepped away. Yet the recordings endured. Over the decades, their tracks resurfaced through sampling culture and were rediscovered by new generations of listeners.
Cymande’s music carries both political awareness and spiritual grounding. The rhythms draw from sound system culture and diasporic memory, while the songwriting reflects questions of identity, community, and belonging. Their recent return, with the album Renascence, does not attempt to revisit the past but continues the same sensibility with maturity and patience. Live, Cymande builds atmosphere gradually. The grooves deepen, horns enter and recede, voices intertwine. At Jazz Middelheim, their music connects jazz to funk and Caribbean lineage, reminding listeners how these traditions have always moved together.
