Unfinished Business
- Saturday Birdland
Unfinished Business is a collective that grew out of the Antwerp Conservatory, where five musicians found each other and developed a shared musical language. Since then, they have been shaping a sound that moves across jazz, rock, funk, and fusion, while remaining grounded in the vocabulary of hard bop. Their music is structured yet open. Compositions often begin from clear frameworks, but quickly shift through improvisation and interaction. Grooves can be tight and direct, then loosen into something more fluid. The band treats form as something flexible, allowing different influences to surface and recede naturally.
There is a strong sense of collective thinking in their playing. Rather than highlighting individual voices, the group moves as a whole, responding in real time and shaping the music from within. This gives their sound a restless quality, always in motion, never fully settled. Live, Unfinished Business balances energy with precision. Familiar references appear, but are constantly reworked into something immediate. At Jazz Middelheim, they reflect a younger generation of musicians for whom jazz is not a fixed style, but a shared space to test ideas and build something together.
