N∆BOU

N∆BOU

Led by Belgian trombonist and composer Nabou Claerhout, NΔBOU moves between structure and openness, balancing introspection with a quiet sense of groove. Emerging from Antwerp’s contemporary jazz scene, Claerhout has developed a voice on the trombone that is both direct and searching, shaped as much by jazz tradition as by a broader interest in texture and form. With NΔBOU, alongside guitarist Gijs Idema, bassist Trui Amerlinck, and drummer Daniel Jonkers, she works with contrast as a central element. The music shifts between density and space, melody and abstraction, often guided by the timbre of the trombone. Rather than foregrounding virtuosity, the quartet builds a collective sound where each gesture feels considered.

Their recent work, Indigo, reflects a process of change and renewal. The compositions unfold gradually, leaving room for interaction and subtle transformation. There is a sense of movement throughout, not towards a fixed destination, but through different emotional states. Live, NΔBOU creates an atmosphere that is both focused and open. The music invites close listening, where small shifts in tone and rhythm carry weight. At Jazz Middelheim, their sound sits comfortably within a generation of European jazz that values nuance, exploration, and shared attention.
